          "Chandragupta II"  was a capable ruler of Gupta dynasty, who was succeeded the throne after his father 'Samudragupta' facing a succession struggle with his brother 'Rama gupta'. Having Pataliputra as his capital, Chandragupta II extended his territory by conquering places and also by martimonial alliances. He build a relationship with the south Indian kings. He married off his daughter Prabhavati to Vakataka prince Rudrasena, who ruled the strategic lands of Deccan. 


With the help of his alliance with Vakataka ruler, Chandragupta II defeated Saka rulers, who had been reigned western parts of India nearly 400 years. This conquer over Sakas gave him a title 'Sakari'. Further, he also defeated northern rulers like the Huns, Kambojas, and Kiratas. Thus, he was a great conqueror and an able administrator.


TRADE AND FOREIGN TRAVELLER:

          Chandragupta II's kingdom highly developed its trade with foreign traders. The Kingdom's prosperity grew out of its trade link with the Roman empire. Chandragupta II was the first indian ruler to establish Silver coins ( in which his various titles were mentioned).



Fa hein was the first Chinese traveller, who came to india. He was a buddhist scholar from china.


He records the prosperity of Chandragupta's empire. In his writings, he mentioned about two major cities of Chandragupta's kingdom Mathura and Pataliputra. Those cities were of highly fertile lands and severe punishments were given for Crimes. 
Chandragupta II's rule formed the peak period of Gupta's territorial expansion. 

NAVARATNAS:



     Chandragupta II 's court had NAVARATNAS or Nine gems i.e. nine people who were eminent in various field of art, literature and science. This group of people includes, a great sanskrit poet Kalidas, Sanskrit scholar Harisena, Physician Dhanvantri, lexicographer Amarasimha, Astrologist Kahapanaka, Architect Sanku, Astronomist Varahamihira, Sanskrit poet & Grammar teacher Vararuchi, Magician Vetaibhatta.
