 KUMARAGUPTA

SON        OF     Chandragupta II ♥ Dhurvadevi

REIGN      _       415 CE - 455 CE

TITLES     #       Chakradhithya

"Kumaragupta" was one of the great Emperor of gupta dynasty, who was succeeded the throne after Chandragupta II. He reigned a inherited large empire, which was conquered by his predecessors. There is no concrete information on his conquests. But, he may faced some battles with Pushyamitras and Huns, who were continously invaded during gupta's reign. From his coins and inscriptions, which was founded in some places other than his inherited territory, we may consider that Kumaragupta conquered the South western parts near Maharastra and his coins also discovered in South Gujarat, which was reigned by Traikutaka dynasty. This leads to a consideration that Kumaragupta conquered South Gujarat, by defeating Traikutakas.

Kumaragupta was considered to be the last great emperor of gupta dynasty.

Kumaragupta was a Hindu emperor, but he was also accepted all other religions like Buddhism and Jainism. He was attracted by the buddhist philosophy, which later led him to built a university. Though there is no concrete evidence of his military conquests, from some evidence we can know that Kumaragupta performed Ashvamedhayaga i.e. Horse sacrifice which was usually performed to prove imperial sovereignity.

NALANDA UNIVERSITY:

Nalanda University was built by Kumaragupta. It was known as Mahavihara in ancient times. It was actually a buddhist monastery also served as a renowned learning centre. It preached the principles and philosophies of Buddha. Later, it was destroyed by Bakthiyar khilji in 1200This university was discovered in 1915 excavation headed by Dharmabalan. The University covers around 30 acres of area. Now, it is one of the UNESCO WORLD HERTIAGE site in India.

COINS & INSCRIPTIONS:

Many silver coins and gold coins were founded, belonging to Kumaragupta's period. Those coins had the insignia of peacock, garuda, horsemen and the Elephant rider.

Nearly 18 inscriptions were discovered that belongs to Kumaragupta's reign.
