"Samudragupta" was one of the important ruler among Guptas, who succeeded the thorne after his father 'Chandragupta I'. He extended his territory from North to Southern parts of India. Samudragupta was known to be the first ever North Indian ruler who made invasion to South India. He invaded upto Kanchipuram, which was ruled by pallava king 'Vishugopa'. Samudragupta defeated Vishugopa and made to pay homeage. Samudragupta made Southern kings to pay tribute and annexed many northern kingdoms. He had conquered the empire of many rulers and changed the kings into pitty state rulers.

Ganges valley was under the direct control of Gupta Empire. The tribals of Rajasthan, the Forest kings of Central & Deccan, Kings of Assam and Bengal in Eastern India paid tribute. While sakas remained unconquered in western India. Samudragupta's campaign broke the power of tribal republics in those regions that led to the repeated invasions of the Huns

Further, it is said that even the foreign kings such as Daivaputra shahanshahi (Kushana), the sakas, and the king of Lanka also paid tribute. The Lankan ruler, Meghavarman sent presents and requested samudragupta's permission to build a Buddhist monastery at Gaya.

Samudragupta's reign lasted for about forty years. This long period of rule must have given him ample time to plan and organise these campaigns. Thus, it is worthy and undeniable to call him as "NAPOLEAN OF INDIA". The historians named him as the Napolean of India.

FAITH & FOLLOWS:

Samudragupta was an ardent follower of Vaishavism. He worshiped 'Lord Vishnu'. But, he also patronised the buddhist scholar 'Vasubandhu'. He gave permission to the Lankan ruler, Meghavarman to build Buddhist monastery at Gaya. This implies that Samudragupta also supported other religions.  He performed 'Ashvamedhayaga' i.e. Horse sacrifice ritual to proclaim his military conquests. He promoted the Sanskrit literature.

INSCRIPTIONS & COINS:

Ashokan pillar

A lengthy eulogy on Samudragupta was inscribed on Ashokan pillar (Allahabad pillar) . This suggests that, he was claiming the legacy of Mauryan kingdom. Harisena, a great poet of samudragupta's reign wrote Prashasti of 33 lines in Naagari script(sanskrit) about Samudragupta in Allahabad pillar. This inscription gives a impressive list of kings and the region that succumbed to Samudragupta's campaign across India.

Vina-coin

Coins of Samudragupta's period bears the insignia of Samudragupta playing the vina i.e. lute.

This shows his interest on music. As a great lover of music and poetry, he was given the title of 'KAVIRAJA'.
